The right cleaning for you
Not every cleaning is the same
A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque, tartar and stains from healthy teeth and gums. It’s preventive, and for most people it’s recommended every six months.
If you’ve had gum disease, you need periodontal maintenance instead: a deeper cleaning below the gumline, usually every three to four months, to keep bacteria from returning. And if it’s been more than a year since your last professional cleaning, heavy tartar can require a full-mouth debridement before we can do a complete exam.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Every six months for most people. If you have gum disease or a higher risk of cavities, we may recommend every three to four months.
Does a cleaning hurt?
Most patients feel little or nothing. If your gums are sensitive, tell your hygienist — we can numb the area or go more slowly.
What is a deep cleaning?
