Dentures questions
How long does it take to get used to dentures?
Most people adjust within a few weeks. Speaking and eating get easier with practice, and we’ll adjust sore spots.
How long do dentures last?
Typically 5 to 10 years. Your gums and bone change over time, so relines or a new denture may be needed.
Can implants hold my denture in place?
Yes. Two or more implants can secure a denture so it doesn’t slip.
What’s the difference between a partial and a full denture?
A partial replaces a few missing teeth and clips to your remaining natural teeth for support. A full denture replaces every tooth in the upper or lower arch and rests on the gums. Both are custom-made from impressions of your mouth.
Should I sleep with my denture in?
Most patients are advised to take it out at night. It gives your gums time to rest, and it’s the best time to clean the denture and keep it in water or a soaking solution so it doesn’t dry out.
How do I clean a denture?
Rinse it after meals and brush it every day with a soft brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner — regular toothpaste can scratch it. Handle it over a folded towel or a sink of water so it doesn’t break if dropped.
Will a new denture change how I eat or speak?
At first it can feel bulky. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once. Reading aloud helps your speech adjust, and we’ll smooth any sore spots at your follow-up.
Do you offer implant-supported dentures?
Yes. If a lower denture keeps slipping, a few dental implants can anchor it so it snaps securely in place. Implant treatment is planned in our office with board-certified periodontist Dr. Rafael Porras.
How often should a denture be checked?
See us at least once a year. Your gums and bone change over time, so a denture may need a reline or an adjustment to keep fitting well.
