Signs you may need one
When the nerve of a tooth is infected
Deep decay, a crack or an old injury can let bacteria reach the pulp — the nerve and blood vessels inside your tooth. Without treatment the infection can spread into the bone and the tooth may be lost.
Common warning signs include lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, throbbing pain, pain when biting, a darkened tooth, swelling, or a small pimple on the gum. Sometimes there are no symptoms and we find it on an X-ray.
- Root canal therapy on front and back teeth
- Diagnosis of tooth pain
- Crowns to protect the tooth afterward

Root Canal Treatment questions
Does a root canal hurt?
The procedure is done with local anesthesia and feels much like getting a filling. It’s the infection that hurts — treatment relieves that pain.
How long does it take?
Many root canals are completed in one or two visits, depending on the tooth and how infected it is.
Is it better to just pull the tooth?
Saving your natural tooth is usually best for chewing and keeping your bite stable. If a tooth can’t be saved, we’ll talk about extraction and replacement.
Will I need a crown after?
Back teeth almost always do, because a treated tooth is more brittle. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling.
